There he goes, a man walks under a cloud
Who knows what plays upon his mind
Or the reason he's trying to hide?
Late to rise and late to bed yet again
As he tirelessly builds his nest
On an island far off the coast
His name in lights, he reigns over his domain
A place for tough guys who never cry
Who can question his wise command?
Poor despite all the deals he's made
And alone despite all the girls he's laid
He jumps from one prospect to another
Born into war, he grew up out on the streets
Became his own inspiration
And his own best friend
He searched high and low for his true calling
Vanishing over the horizon
Leaving a trail of unpaid bills
Poor despite all the deals he's made
And alone despite all the girls he's laid
He jumps from one prospect to another
Poor despite all the deals he's made
And alone despite all the girls he's laid
What he lost can't be claimed back with an invoice
He's in high demand with the wealthy and the wise
His phone rings constantly day and night
He won't reveal himself, for his mystery's his strength
And he thinks nothing at all of dealing out
From a deck of marked cards
He plays the girls like slot machines
And he won't quit until he wins
But they've no chance of getting in
He guards his ideas like a sentry
Betting on the horses of chance and fate
But will he ever fill the void inside?
There he goes, a man walks under a cloud
Who knows what plays upon his mind
Or the reason he's trying to hide?

I Don't Mind
04:43
|
|||
This frozen morning, these empty streets
I wish I was there with you, under the sheets
I am awake while the world still sleeps
A man out of time cursed by the knowledge he keeps
We shared everything that we had to give
Loved one another, it made my heart want to live
But the tide is turning, and I am alone
You stay at home while I go on on my own
I don't mind that you never came to my party
I don't mind that you screwed up the notes I sent you
Who am I kidding, it's not meant to be
My home isn't here and I need to be free
These tears and heartache are all that I know
But I've saved us more misery by deciding to go
For one perfect moment we held each other
Our souls intertwined, my beautiful lover
But all the more reason to leave it here
And call it quits while everything is still clear
I don't mind that you never came to my party
I don't mind that you screwed up the notes I sent you
Because last night, I kissed you and told you I loved you
And then you told me you loved me too
I heard you singing softly, I heard you calling softly
A million years of dark would be lit by the spark of your smile
And you know what you do to me, you know the effect you have on me
I'm just glad I held your hand, for a while, for a while
I'll look you up if I'm in town again
But I can't promise you if and I can't promise you when
Sometimes the odds are too tough to beat
You just do your best and try to smile in defeat
One thing's for sure, I feel more of a man
For loving you and for knowing I can
So look me up if you're ever around
I once was lost but thanks to you I'm now found

A Star Was Born
03:40
|
|||
Something came flying through the night sky
A visitor sent from the heavens
A prophecy straight from the good book
But the wise men were all caught sleeping
A nativity most unexpected
That didn’t bear the divine postmark
I had a three-minute warning
I left holding what I was carrying
And in that moment the earth was lit up
As man reaped what he’d sewn
And in that moment, scenes of mass panic
As a star was born
Now we’re all underground
And we’re never coming out
Yes we’re all underground
And we’re never opening up
Yes we’re all underground, watching lights, watching dials
I can remember the good times
Sat with my friends in the park
Staring up at the wonderful blue sky
We felt caressed by the sunshine
Going and buying an ice-cream
Throwing a stick for my pet dog
Driving out to a pub for lunch
Wondering where to go on my holidays (but in that moment…)
All the faces I knew and cared for
And all the places I used to visit
Got erased in a sudden flash of light
Burning white like napalm
Every single blade of green grass
And all the little birds in the trees
Got deleted like computer documents
And scattered on the wind like fine dust (cos in that moment…)
Scores of workers burrowed like tiny ants
Biting a chunk from the topsoil
Filling it up with concrete
Filling it with miles of pipes and wires
Neon tubes simulate daylight
As we glimpse the real thing through our periscope
Mountains and mountains of tinned food
Fill the cavern like tower blocks
And maybe one day the threat will diminish
As the building blocks crumble down
Then the roaches and our grandkids
Will join together to inherit the earth (but we’re all…)

Every Day Of The Week
06:03
|
|||
I woke today and it fell into place
With an easy and natural grace
I realised what I'd been searching for
And what it was that made me run for the door
And in that moment I felt so free
I was everything I wanted to be
And everything I ever desired
Shines inside me like a fire
And now it's over I wish I could describe it to you
But there are no words to convey it
I'm on a journey and I wish I could take you with me
When we go our own separate ways
Only I know what truly makes me run, and that's the way I'll keep it
Every day of the week I come back for more
Every day of the week I bring home the corn
Every day of the week I bang my head on the wall
'Cos one of these days all the bricks will fall
I know I seem like a bit of a mystery
But if you only knew of my history
You'd hear stories you'd scarcely believe
Tales of intrigue and mischief
A spider's web of alibi and disguise
Where each day brings a fresh new surprise
A new town and new circumstances
Breed new vendettas and romances
And now you know this I wish I could describe it to you...
And so, not long to go, I must once more hit the track
Kiss my girl goodbye, and pack my life into a bag
And journey over the hill to find another pot of honey
And look for another reason why there's more to life than money
I'll keep on wandering till the end of my days
To places where no-one knows my face
Towns and cities and countries and states
The world creates and disintegrates
We're all travelling, inside or outside
And I've run out of reasons to hide
We can run and we can be free
And see as far as we want to see
And now I know this I wish I could describe it to you...

It's such a beautiful evening
But I've got so much to do
I've been invited to a thousand parties
But none of them are as appealing as you
The Lord Mayor waits in my pantry
But I'm so tired of being the guest of state
My mind is roaming free
Tonight the carnival's in town
I'd make a million friends there
But the window is locked...
I've fallen in love with life
But really I've fallen in love with you
Too bad you're heading in the other direction
But then life can be savagely cruel
You've got to laugh your way through the heartache
It's no life being bitter and blue
And my mind is roaming free
Tonight the carnival's in town
I'd make a million friends there
But the window is locked...
I'm on a rollercoaster that's taking me high up in the clouds
But I wish I could control it, I can't even see what's round this bend
Won't somebody slam the breaks on before I leave everyone behind
Like ants on the ground?
It's such a beautiful evening
But I've got too much to loose
I dance between a thousand parties
But everything just reminds me of you
I'd give anything to stop and smell the roses
But there's too much to do that I just can't miss
And my mind is roaming free
Tonight the carnival's in town
I'd make a million friends there
I'd feel completely in place there
So I'll smash the window...

The Wolf (Bonus Track)
04:38
|
|||
There's sunshine a-coming
I play in the sand with my sugary mice
Time to share a big surprise
About my friend the wolf
He's my baby brother
He's been there through thick and thin
Those villagers don't take to him
But I reckon we'll show them
Why should I listen to the preacher?
Why must I throw all my treasure down the well?
Why should I lie to the children?
The truth has a habit of rising to the surface
All I've ever wanted
Is a feeling of clarity
All my life the anxiety
Has been lurking at the door
The wolf, he protects me
I help him out when he gets into scrapes
Bandage his paws with surgical tape
And cut his hair with scissors
Who are they to tell us what to do?
We're going to run away and start a big adventure
Building a ladder over the moon
They'll never bring us back down now
We've been circling far over the deep blue ocean
Having some wine, and a good time
There's no storms a-coming
Where did I put my sugary mice?
The pie I'm baking is coming on nice
I baked my friend the wolf
He doesn't seem too tasty
We should have used more of your spice
Think you can fool the great and good?
Well we'll have fun finding out
